Create a Backup Checklist

When you make plans for backing up an application, make sure to include any services it relies on, such as the Domain Name System (DNS), directory, and certificate services, as well as databases. For example, suppose you have a customer portal Web application that uses a database server to store the customer profiles. A sample checklist might look like this:

Web server

  •  Operating system
  •  Web site content files
  •  Web site configuration information
  •  Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate

Database server

  •  Operating system
  •  Database configuration information
  •  Customer profiles database
  •  Customer profiles database transaction logs

DNS servers

  •  Operating system
  •  Customer portal domain files

Directory servers

  •  Operating system
  •  Directory database
