Java Pro Presents Community Awards
The JCP and Java Pro recognize Java leaders and innovations.

The Java Community Process (JCP) and Java Pro magazine announced winners of their JCP Awards and Community Awards, respectively, on Tuesday, June 29, 2004. In its second year, the JCP Awards were presented at a ceremony held during JavaOne at the Java Technology Community in Action event. This year, the JCP added three new categories: JCP Member of the Year, Outstanding Spec Lead for J2SE/J2EE, and Outstanding Spec Lead for J2ME.

 
  Onno Kluyt accepts Java Pro Community Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Java Community.

The JCP Executive Committee members and the JCP Program Management Office (PMO) nominated candidates in five categories and then selected the award winners.

The winners of the 2004 JCP Awards are:

JCP Member of the Year
Doug Lea

Outstanding Spec Lead for J2SE/J2EE JSR
Josh Bloch (Sun), JSR 175 and JSR 201

Outstanding Spec Lead for J2ME JSR
Tolga Capin (Nokia), JSR 226

Most Innovative JSR for J2SE/J2EE
JSR 241, Groovy

Most Innovative JSR for J2ME
JSR 234, Advanced Multimedia Supplements

More than 240 Java technology specifications are in development in the JCP program. 46 percent of these specifications are in final stages.

Also during the awards ceremony, Java Pro magazine presented its fifth annual Community Awards that recognize the best individual or group contribution to Java technology and the best individual or group contribution to the Java community. Java Pro's editors selected the award recipients.

 
  FTP President Jim Fawcette presented Java Pro's fifth annual Community Awards.

This year's winners are:

Outstanding Individual or Group Contribution to Java Technology
Craig McClanahan, Senior Staff Engineer, Sun Microsystems
McClanahan is the architect for the Sun Java Studio Creator product and has served as co-specification lead for JavaServer Faces (JSR 127), as well as Web tier architect for the J2EE platform. He is also the original author of the Struts Framework.

Outstanding Individual or Group Contribution to the Java Community
Onno Kluyt, Director, JCP Program Management Office and Jini Program
Kluyt leads the Program Office for the JCP. The Program Office oversees the JCP process, manages its membership, guides specification leads and experts through the process, leads the Executive Committee meetings, and manages the JCP.org Web site. Kluyt also heads up the Jini Program, including Jini technology and the Jini community.
