2002 Java Pro
Technology Roundtable
Java industry insiders debate technology and market directions for the year ahead
Moderated by Simon Phipps

November 2002 Issue

Each year during JavaOne in San Francisco, this magazine convenes a group of industry technologists to examine the state of the Java community and set directions for the year ahead. This year's roundtable took place March 27, 2002, off the show floor in a hotel boardroom. The panel included senior technical representatives from 12 prominent Java technology providers.

Sun's technology evangelist Simon Phipps ably served as moderator for the second consecutive year, cutting a wide swath through the issues and opportunities facing the Java community. In the first section, panelists assess what's new and what's old about Web services, and gauge the progress toward enterprise implementations. Section two addresses the challenges Java faces in ease of development, standards process latency, and .Net co-opetition, among others. The last section explores Java's success in wireless smartphones and what is needed to solidify Java's central role in wireless data communications.

The audio of the event is available on the Java Pro Web site at ftponline.com/reports/javaone/032802/roundtable. This edited text version serves as a roadmap to product and technology directions for the coming year—until the panel sits down again in June 2003. — Dan Ruby, Editorial Director
